Sorbitol Powder — also known as E420, D-Glucitol, D-Sorbitol, Sorbit or Sorbol — is a white, crystalline polyol (sugar alcohol) that functions as a bulk sweetener, humectant and texturizing agent across foods, pharmaceutical and personal-care products. It pours and blends cleanly and carries a smooth mouthfeel with a sweet, cool and pleasant taste. It is very soluble in water and slightly soluble in alcohol, so it disperses easily in aqueous systems.
Sorbitol is roughly 60% as sweet as sucrose while delivering about one-third fewer calories, making it a practical way to reduce sugar and calories without giving up bulk or mouthfeel. It is non-cariogenic (tooth-friendly) and is widely used in sugar-reduced and special-diet formulations.
Sorbitol has been safely used in processed foods for almost half a century. It is affirmed as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) by the U.S. Food Administration and is approved for use in the European Union and numerous other countries, including Australia, Canada and Japan. This grade conforms to USP / BP / EP and FCC V and is supplied for food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical applications.
