Sorbitol Powder is a polyol (sugar alcohol) and a bulk sweetener used in a very wide range of food, pharmaceutical and personal care products. It presents as a white or almost-white crystalline powder, is very soluble in water and slightly soluble in alcohol, and delivers a smooth mouthfeel with a sweet, cool and pleasant taste. Some common synonyms by which buyers search for it include D-Glucitol, D-Sorbitol, Sorbit, and Sorbol.
Sorbitol is about 60% as sweet as sucrose while providing about one-third fewer calories, which lets formulators reduce sugar without losing bulk or body. It is non-cariogenic — it does not promote tooth decay — and may be useful to people with diabetes. Because of its humectant and texturizing properties, it also helps control moisture, improve mouthfeel and stabilise texture in a finished product.
Sorbitol has been safely used in processed foods for a very long time. It has been affirmed as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) by the U.S. Food Administration and is approved for use by the European Union and numerous countries around the world, including Australia, Canada and Japan. In addition to food, it is widely used in pharmaceutical and in the cosmetics industry.
