Sorbitol Powder (also known as D-Glucitol, D-Sorbitol, Sorbit or Sorbol) is a polyol (sugar alcohol) widely used as a bulk sweetener in food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic products. It is supplied as a white to almost-white crystalline powder with a smooth mouthfeel and a sweet, cool and pleasant taste. It is very soluble in water and slightly soluble in alcohol.
Sorbitol is about 60% as sweet as sucrose with one-third fewer calories, making it a practical bulk sweetener for sugar-reduced and reduced-calorie products. It is non-cariogenic (tooth-friendly) and may be useful in special-diet applications. It has been affirmed as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) by the U.S. Food Administration and is approved for use by the European Union and numerous other countries, including Australia, Canada and Japan.
