Sorbitol Solution 70% is a clear, colourless polyol syrup — the liquid form of sorbitol (also called D-glucitol, D-sorbitol or sorbitol syrup) — with a dry-substance content of 70% or more. It belongs to the sugar-alcohol family and is used across the food, oral-care, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries as a sweetener, a humectant and a bodying agent. This page sets out what the material is, the two grades in which it is supplied, its full specification, and how it is packed and shipped — so a buyer or formulator can specify it with confidence.
Why manufacturers buy the liquid form. A powder has to be weighed, dissolved and dispersed; a 70% syrup does not. It can be pumped, metered or poured straight into the batch — no dusting, no lumping, no extra dissolution tank, and far less risk of airborne contamination on the filling line. Because the concentration is tightly controlled (dry substance ≥ 70%, water content ≤ 30%), every drum behaves the same way in your process, batch after batch.
What it does in the finished product. Sorbitol solution is unusually multi-functional for a single ingredient:
Sweetens
Holds moisture
Builds body and mouthfeel
Controls crystallisation
Depresses the freezing point
Sweetens without promoting tooth decay
Two grades, one specification family. Both grades are food and pharmaceutical qualified. The Crystalline grade conforms to BP / USP / EP and carries a higher D-sorbitol content (≥ 68.0%) with lower D-mannitol (≤ 1.5%) — the usual choice for higher-purity pharmaceutical and oral-care work. The Non-Crystalline grade conforms to BP / USP, allows more D-mannitol, and is tested for crystallisation resistance, so it stays liquid in storage and in use.
Safety and regulatory. Sorbitol has been safely used in processed foods for almost half a century, is affirmed GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) by the U.S. Food Administration, and is approved for use in the European Union and in many countries including Australia, Canada and Japan.

Below are actual batch results for the Non-Crystalline grade, reproduced so you can judge the material on real numbers rather than limits alone. Read together, they show a syrup that is on-strength (dry substance 70.61%), low in reducing sugars (0.13%) and trace metals, electrically clean (resistivity 6.4 µS/cm) and microbiologically sound — and that passes the crystallisation-resistance test.

Sorbitol Solution 70% is released batch by batch against the specification above — nothing ships until the batch conforms. The verification sits on four levels.
1. Strength and identity. Dry substance (≥ 70%) and water content (≤ 30%) are checked together so each drum is on-strength. Identity is confirmed through refractive index and specific gravity, and — on the Crystalline grade — through specific rotatory power (≤ +5.3°), a direct optical check that the correct isomer is present.
2. Purity. Sulphated ash / residue on ignition ≤ 0.10%, chloride ≤ 10 mg/kg and sulphate ≤ 20 mg/kg keep residual salts low. Resistivity (≤ 10 µS/cm Non-Crystalline; ≤ 20 µS/cm Crystalline) is a fast, practical indicator of overall ionic cleanliness — useful wherever the syrup meets sensitive downstream chemistry.
3. Trace elements. Heavy metals (as Pb) ≤ 1.0 mg/kg, nickel ≤ 1.0 mg/kg, iron ≤ 1.0 mg/kg and arsenic (as As2O3) ≤ 1.0 mg/kg. These are the limits food, oral-care and pharmaceutical buyers audit first, and they are met on every batch.
4. Microbiology and stability. Fungus count ≤ 100 cfu/ml, and — on the Non-Crystalline grade — a crystallisation-resistance test (18 °C for 48 h, non-crystallising) that confirms the syrup will not throw crystals in storage or in use.
Standards and standing. Crystalline grade conforms to BP / USP / EP; Non-Crystalline grade conforms to BP / USP. Both are food and pharmaceutical qualified, GRAS-affirmed by the U.S. FDA, approved in the European Union and in many countries including Australia, Canada and Japan, and labelled INS 420 / E 420.
Documentation. A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is issued for the batch supplied, and the specification and MSDS are available on request — so your QA and regulatory teams can review the material before the first drum arrives.
