Sorbitol Solution 70% is a clear, colourless, syrupy liquid, fully miscible with water in all proportions. Chemically it is D-Glucitol (D-Sorbitol), a polyol (sugar alcohol) with the formula C₆H₁₄O₆ and a molecular weight of 182.17 g/mol. It is identified as CAS No. 50-70-4, INS No. 420 / E420, and is declared under H.S. Code 29054400.
As a bulk liquid sweetener, sorbitol is about 60 percent as sweet as sucrose, with a smooth mouthfeel and a sweet, cool, pleasant taste. It is also a humectant — it holds moisture in the finished product rather than releasing it — which is why the same drum serves formulations that need sweetness and formulations that need moisture retention.
The product is manufactured to Non-Crystalline BP / USP specification. This grade is validated by a functional test written into the specification: the resist experiment, in which the solution is held at −18 °C for 48 hours and must remain non-crystalline. That test is what protects a shipment through winter transit, cold storage and slow-moving inventory, and it is the reason the chemical limits on this grade sit in a deliberately wider band than a high-purity crystalline grade would carry.
Sorbitol has been affirmed as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) by the U.S. Food Administration, and is approved for use by the European Union and by numerous countries worldwide, including Australia, Canada and Japan. A batch certificate of analysis and the product specification sheet accompany every shipment.
