Sorbitol Solution 70% — also written as liquid sorbitol, sorbitol syrup or D-sorbitol solution — is a water-white, syrupy, odourless liquid obtained by the catalytic hydrogenation of glucose syrup. It belongs to the polyol (sugar alcohol) family, carries the food-additive numbers E 420 and INS 420, and is registered under CAS No. 50-70-4 and HS Code 29054400.
As a bulk sweetener, sorbitol is about 60 % as sweet as sucrose and carries roughly one-third fewer calories, with a smooth, cool and pleasant mouthfeel. In industrial use it is valued not for sweetness but for three functional properties:
Humectancy
1. — it holds moisture in the finished product, keeping toothpaste soft, confectionery chewy and baked goods fresh.
Chemical reactivity
2. — its six hydroxyl groups make it the starting point for sorbitan esters (Spans), polysorbates (Tweens) and polyurethane / polyester polyols.
Process stability
3. — it is stable, non-corrosive to glass, non-polymerizing and freely water-soluble, so it blends easily into aqueous formulations.
Sorbitol has been safely used in processed foods for almost half a century. It is affirmed as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) by the U.S. FDA and approved for use by the European Union, Australia, Canada and Japan. Our solution is produced in crystalline and non-crystallizing grades so you can match the exact D-sorbitol content your formula requires.

Sorbitol Solution 70% is a sugar alcohol sweetener and moisture-retention agent used across the food industry:
Confectionery & chewing gum
Bakery & biscuits
Beverages & liquid concentrates
Ice cream & frozen desserts
Sauces, dressings and fillings
Nutrition & dietetic products
, roughly 60 % as sweet as sucrose with about one-third fewer calories.
Toothpaste-grade liquid sorbitol is the standard humectant in toothpaste, mouthwash and dental gels. It keeps the paste soft, glossy and extrudable from the first use to the last, prevents the cap and nozzle from drying out and hardening, and — unlike glycerine — leaves no sticky residue. Because it is non-cariogenic, it fits sugar-free oral care positioning. Our toothpaste grade is supplied on a non-crystallizing basis so the paste never grains or hardens in the tube.
In creams, lotions, toners, shampoos, conditioners, shaving creams and skincare serums, sorbitol acts as a humectant / moisturiser that draws and holds water in the formulation, improves spreadability, and reduces the tackiness of glycerine-heavy systems. It is also used as a viscosity and freeze-thaw modifier.
Sorbitan esters (Spans) and polysorbates (Tweens)
non-ionic surfactants and emulsifiers
used in food, cosmetics, agrochemicals, lubricants and oilfield chemistry.
Polyurethane and polyester polyols
Alkyd resins and surface coatings

Q1. What is Sorbitol Solution 70%? It is a clear, colourless liquid containing about 70 % dissolved solids, of which the main component is D-sorbitol (D-glucitol). It is a polyol / sugar alcohol used as a humectant, bulk sweetener and chemical intermediate.
Q2. What is the CAS number and HS code? CAS No. 50-70-4; HS Code 29054400; food-additive numbers E 420 and INS 420.
Q3. What is the difference between crystalline and non-crystallizing sorbitol solution? Crystalline grade carries a higher D-sorbitol content (≥ 68 % in our 70 % specification) and is suitable where maximum sweetening power and solids load are wanted. Non-crystallizing grade corresponds to E 420 (ii): it contains hydrogenated saccharides alongside D-sorbitol, can have a lower D-sorbitol content, and resists crystallisation — which is why toothpaste and liquid humectant systems normally specify it.
Q4. Which grades can you supply? Food grade, toothpaste / daily-chemical grade and industrial grade, in both crystalline and non-crystallizing types. Graded COA and specification sheets are available on request.
Q5. Is liquid sorbitol suitable for sugar-free products? Yes. Sorbitol is a non-cariogenic sugar alcohol, so it is widely used in sugar-free confectionery, chewing gum and oral care.
Q6. What packaging do you ship in? New plastic drums or steel drums at 250 kg, 270 kg or 275 kg, plus IBC drums and flexible bags (flexitank) for bulk ocean freight.
Q7. What is the shelf life and how should it be stored? Two years in unopened original packaging, stored cool, dry and well ventilated, away from heat and oxidising agents.
Q8. Do you provide a COA and MSDS? Yes — a batch-specific COA, MSDS and TDS are issued with every shipment, and samples of the documentation pack can be shared before you order.
Q9. Can I get a sample before ordering in bulk? Yes. Request a sample through the contact form and we will confirm sample size, documentation and courier details with you.
Q10. Can I use Sorbitol Solution 70% to make sorbitan esters or polyols? Yes. Sorbitol is a standard polyol feedstock for sorbitan esters (Spans), polysorbates (Tweens) and for polyurethane / polyester polyols, thanks to its six hydroxyl groups.
Q11. What is the typical specific gravity of the solution? The specification requires ≥ 1.290 g/ml at 20 °C; the reference batch measured 1.313 g/ml. This is why liquid sorbitol is sold by weight rather than by volume.
Q12. How much can you supply and how fast? Both supply capability and lead time depend on grade, packing and destination port. Send your required volume, packing preference and destination and we will come back with a firm offer.
