Sorbitol Powder 20–120 Mesh, E420 Food Grade Cryoprotectant for Frozen Surimi
Sorbitol Powder (CAS No. 50-70-4, INS No. 420 / E420, H.S. Code 29054400) is a white, crystalline powder of the sugar alcohol D-Glucitol (D-Sorbitol), also known as Sorbit or Sorbol, with the molecular formula C₆H₁₄O₆ and a molecular weight of 182.2 g/mol. This grade is supplied as a broad 20–120 mesh crystalline cut and is manufactured to FCC, USP, BP and EP specifications.
Sorbitol performs two functions from a single ingredient. As a polyol bulk sweetener it delivers roughly 60 percent of the sweetness of sucrose with about one-third fewer calories, a smooth mouthfeel and a clean, cool sweetness, and it is non-cariogenic. As a humectant and texturizing agent it retains moisture, controls water activity and stabilises texture through storage and long-distance shipment.
For frozen seafood processors the decisive property is cryoprotection. Sorbitol stabilises myofibrillar protein against freeze-induced denaturation, helping surimi and frozen fish retain gel-forming ability, water-holding capacity and texture after frozen storage — with markedly less sweetness and browning than sucrose alone.
We manufacture and export this product directly from our own plant, in bulk, with a Certificate of Analysis and Specification issued for every shipment.

Sorbitol is a standard component of cryoprotectant systems for surimi and frozen fish mince. During frozen storage, ice-crystal growth and solute concentration destabilise myofibrillar proteins, which shows up downstream as reduced gel strength, poor water-holding capacity, increased drip loss and a rubbery or spongy texture.
Sorbitol counteracts this by preferentially hydrating the protein surface and limiting the structural rearrangement that leads to denaturation and aggregation. The practical result is that Ca²⁺-ATPase activity, salt-soluble protein content and kamaboko gel strength are retained closer to their pre-freezing values over extended frozen storage.
It is normally applied as a blend rather than alone. Typical additions are in the range of 4–8 percent of surimi or fish-mince weight, commonly combined with sucrose and a food-grade phosphate such as sodium tripolyphosphate or sodium hexametaphosphate. The exact ratio and dosage should be established by the processor's own trials against the target gel strength, sweetness and labelling requirements.
Choosing sorbitol within that blend carries two practical advantages: it contributes noticeably less sweetness than an equivalent weight of sucrose, and it participates far less in Maillard browning, which keeps frozen and subsequently heat-set products closer to their intended colour.
The 20–120 mesh cut disperses and dissolves rapidly in chilled paste with no gritty residue, so it can be added at the blending stage without a separate milling step.
The same cryoprotective mechanism applies to frozen fish fillets, fish mince and frozen dough systems, where sorbitol limits drip loss, texture hardening and yeast damage respectively.
In sugar-free chewing gum, hard and soft candy, chocolate, bakery products and desserts, Sorbitol Powder acts as the bulk sweetener that provides a smooth, cool sweetness while controlling sugar crystallisation and retaining moisture. Its free-flowing crystalline form blends readily into dry mixes.
Sorbitol is a recognised humectant and texturizing agent in toothpaste and mouthwash, maintaining paste consistency and preventing premature drying.
As a sweetening, bulking and bodying agent, Sorbitol Powder is used in chewable tablets, oral granules, lozenges, syrups and vitamin formulations, including directly compressible applications where particle size distribution matters. Food-grade material is supplied against FCC, USP, BP and EP specifications; a dedicated pharmacopoeia grade is available where the application requires it.
Its moisture-retention and skin-conditioning properties make it a valued humectant in creams, lotions and body washes.
Crystalline sorbitol also serves as a humectant, plasticiser and crystallisation inhibitor in technical applications where water-activity control matters.

Parameters marked "reported per COA" are tested and stated on each batch certificate. A complete specification document is issued with every quotation.
Raw materials are inspected on arrival for identity, assay and moisture. Production is controlled in process for concentration, pH and colour, and finished powder is tested for assay, purity, sugar profile, moisture, density, particle-size distribution, heavy metals and microbiology before release. Retention samples of each batch are held for traceability. Every shipment is accompanied by a Certificate of Analysis and Specification for the actual batch shipped; third-party inspection and pre-shipment testing can be arranged on request.
Standard packing is a 25 kg PP woven bag with a food-grade PE inner liner. Jumbo bags and customer-specified packaging are available on request. Bags are palletised or loaded loose according to buyer preference, and container loadability is confirmed at the order stage against the agreed packing format.
Shipment is arranged from Chinese ports with full export documentation, including commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin where applicable, Certificate of Analysis and Specification.

Store in a sealed container in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place away from direct sunlight, moisture and strong odours. Keep the inner liner closed after partial use to prevent moisture pickup. Under these conditions the product has a shelf life of 24 months from the date of manufacture. It is not classified as dangerous goods for transport.

We produce it, we do not just trade it. Qingdao Golden Grain Chemical Co., Ltd runs its own sorbitol line — starch slurry preparation, catalytic hydrogenation, crystallisation and a controlled clean-room packing area — and exports directly. Your order is produced by the plant that issues the certificate, with no intermediary between your specification and the batch.
We understand what a cryoprotectant has to deliver. Sorbitol for surimi is not bought on mesh size alone. We discuss gel strength retention, drip loss, blend ratio with sucrose and phosphate, and dosage against your process, because that is where the result is decided.
The grade is documented, not described. Every shipment carries a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis and Specification. Retention samples from each batch are held, so a question raised months later can still be traced back to the material actually shipped.
Certification you can file in your own dossier. HACCP, ISO, HALAL, KOSHER and BRC certification are held and copies are issued on request — useful when your own customer or auditor asks for supplier qualification.
One supplier for the whole polyol range. Sorbitol powder and solution, maltitol powder and syrup, mannitol, trehalose, erythritol and inositol, alongside HPMC, CMC and sodium bicarbonate. Consolidating several raw materials with one manufacturer reduces supplier audits, paperwork and lead-time risk.
Shipped from Qingdao, documented in-house. Ocean freight, export documentation, Certificate of Analysis and Specification are all prepared by our own team, so the paperwork matches the batch rather than being assembled afterwards.
Come and audit the plant. Factory visits and third-party inspection are welcome at any stage of the discussion — before the first order, or before a repeat one.
We answer with data. Questions about mesh distribution, impurity limits or documentation are answered from the specification and the batch certificate, not from a sales script.
Send your required mesh distribution, application and order quantity — we will respond with the matching grade, batch COA data and packing options.
