Sorbitol Powder, also catalogued as D-Glucitol (CAS 50-70-4, E420 / INS 420), is a white crystalline hexitol polyol. In oral care manufacturing it serves one primary function: it is the humectant that keeps a toothpaste or dental gel moist, smooth and dimensionally stable from the filling line to the last squeeze of the tube.
As a polyol humectant, sorbitol holds water inside the paste matrix. Without it, the abrasive and thickener system loses moisture through the tube wall, the surface dries and cracks, and the paste stiffens into a hard plug at the shoulder. Sorbitol keeps the mass pliable, preserves the glossy surface finish buyers judge in the first two seconds, and stabilises texture across the declared shelf life. It works inside existing glycerin-based humectant systems and can carry part of the humectant load where a lower-viscosity or less tacky paste is wanted.
The second function is sweetness. Sorbitol delivers roughly 60% of the sweetness of sucrose with a clean, slightly cooling mouthfeel and no cariogenic sugar. It is non-cariogenic and tooth-friendly, which is why it anchors sugar-free and low-calorie oral care lines rather than sugar syrups. In mouthwash and oral rinse concentrates it sweetens without the sticky residue that sugar leaves behind, and it does not mask the flavour oils the way heavy syrups do.
Powder form matters for process, not just handling. An 80-120 mesh crystalline powder dissolves quickly in the water phase, disperses evenly against silica abrasives and cellulose thickeners, and leaves no gritty residue in the finished paste. For high-shear mixing and continuous toothpaste lines, that dissolution speed shortens the batch cycle and reduces the risk of undissolved crystals showing up as specks in a white or gel base.

Toothpaste base and gel. Sorbitol is the humectant of choice for opaque, striped and transparent gel dentifrice. In clear gel systems it keeps the structure transparent where glycerin alone can cloud the base, and it holds the gel from syneresis during storage. Typical addition is in the 10-25% range of the paste formula, adjusted against the glycerin level and the thickener system.
Whitening and sensitivity toothpaste. High-solids whitening pastes and sensitivity formulations run a tight water balance. Sorbitol carries moisture without adding free water, so the abrasive load can be raised without the paste drying at the crimp.
Mouthwash and oral rinse concentrates. In rinse bases sorbitol sweetens and adds body without sugar, and it improves the mouthfeel of alcohol-free rinses that otherwise taste thin. It dissolves cleanly into the water phase at ambient temperature.
Dental gel and oral care gel. Gels for professional and consumer use rely on sorbitol for clarity, spreadability and moisture retention on the applicator tip.
Dentifrice powder and oral care blends. For powder-format dentifrice and dry oral care blends, the 80-120 mesh cut disperses uniformly and resists caking in the sachet.
Adjacent oral care formats such as children's toothpaste, travel-size dentifrice and medicated-style gels share the same humectant logic and can be quoted against the same grade.
Each production batch is sampled at the reactor, at the crystalliser and at the packing line. Assay is confirmed by HPLC, moisture by Karl Fischer, and mesh distribution by sieve analysis before the batch is released. Heavy metals and arsenic are tested against the limit in the specification, and microbiological counts are run on the finished powder.
Batch numbering runs through the bag, the pallet label and the certificate of analysis, so a bag received in a warehouse can be traced back to its crystallisation batch. Retained samples are held for the declared shelf life for any re-test request.
Standard packing is a 25kg PP woven bag with an inner PE liner, heat-sealed against moisture pickup. Bags are palletised on request, and neutral packing or buyer-labelled packing can be arranged for bulk orders. Container loading is confirmed per order against the destination port and the palletisation chosen. Full container, LCL and mixed-container shipments are all handled, with booking documents and the certificate of analysis issued before dispatch.
Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated warehouse away from direct sunlight. Keep bags closed when not in use, off the floor and away from strong odours, since sorbitol picks up foreign smells readily. Avoid storage above 40°C and against walls that condense. Under these conditions the powder stays free flowing for 24 months in unopened original packaging. Once a bag is opened, reseal it and use the contents within a short production window.
