Sorbitol Powder (CAS No. 50-70-4, EINECS No. 200-061-5, INS No. 420 / E420, H.S. Code 29054400) is a white, crystalline powder of the sugar alcohol D-Glucitol (D-Sorbitol) — also known as Sorbit or Sorbol — with the molecular formula C₆H₁₄O₆ and molecular weight 182.2 g/mol. It is manufactured in a single grade that simultaneously conforms to the world's major pharmacopeia and food standards: USP, BP, EP and FCC.
As a polyol (sugar alcohol) bulk sweetener, Sorbitol Powder is about 60 percent as sweet as sucrose with one-third fewer calories, offering a smooth mouthfeel and a sweet, cool, pleasant taste. It is non-cariogenic — it does not promote tooth decay — and may be useful in products for people managing sugar intake, which makes it a preferred sugar substitute in sugar-free foods, confectionery and oral-care products.
