Sorbitol is a polyol (sugar alcohol) and a bulk sweetener found in a wide range of food products. It is about 60 % as sweet as sucrose while providing one-third fewer calories, and it has a smooth mouthfeel with a sweet, cool and pleasant taste. Sorbitol has been safely used in processed foods for a long time. Functionally it serves as a humectant, texturizing agent and nutritive sweetener, which is why it appears in food additives, in the pharmaceutical industry and in cosmetics. It is non-cariogenic, and its use is recognised by regulators: sorbitol has been affirmed as GRAS (Generally Recognised As Safe) by the U.S. Food Administration and is approved for use by the European Union and by numerous countries worldwide, including Australia, Canada and Japan.
