Sorbitol Solution 70% (CAS No. 50-70-4, EINECS No. 200-061-5, INS No. 420 / E420) is a clear, colorless, syrupy liquid consisting of approximately 70% D-Sorbitol and 30% water. Chemically it is D-Glucitol (D-Sorbitol), a polyol (sugar alcohol) with the molecular formula C₆H₁₄O₆ and molecular weight 182.17 g/mol.
Why does one product come in two grades? Because downstream processes differ:
Crystalline grade
well-defined, high-purity sorbitol profile
is required — high dry substance (≥ 70%), high D-sorbitol (≥ 68%) and very low D-mannitol (≤ 1.5%) deliver precise, reproducible composition for regulated formulations.
Non-Crystalline grade
sugar crystallization must never occur
— it passes the

, making it the dependable choice for toothpaste, syrups, cold-chain logistics and any formula stored or shipped at low temperature.
Both grades behave as classic sorbitol: a bulk sweetener about 60 percent as sweet as sucrose with one-third fewer calories, a smooth mouthfeel and a sweet, cool, pleasant taste. Sorbitol has been used safely in processed foods for almost half a century, is affirmed as GRAS by the U.S. FDA, and is approved for use in the EU, Australia, Canada, Japan and numerous other countries. Every shipment includes a full Certificate of Analysis (COA), Specification and Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).

Oral Care & Cosmetics (non-crystalline grade). The classic humectant in toothpaste and mouthwash — keeping paste moist, spreadable and shelf-stable, and staying crystal-free in storage. The same moisture-binding chemistry smooths creams, lotions, shampoos and conditioners with a less tacky finish.
Syrups, Confectionery & Beverages (non-crystalline grade). In sugar-free gum, candy, chocolate and baked goods, the solution delivers clean, cooling sweetness while suppressing sugar crystallization and holding moisture for freshness. Its ready-to-dose liquid form suits syrups, beverages, jams and jellies where crystallization must be avoided and smooth texture is required.
Pharmaceutical (both grades). As a sweetening and bodying excipient in oral syrups, liquid solutions, chewable tablets and vitamin preparations, with BP/USP/EP compliance supporting regulated-market submissions; the crystalline grade offers the tightest composition control.
Industrial & Technical (both grades). A humectant, plasticizer and crystallization inhibitor in adhesives, printing inks and other technical fluids; the non-crystalline grade is preferred wherever low-temperature stability is a requirement.
Both grades meet BP / USP / EP specifications (crystalline and non-crystalline respectively), hold GRAS affirmation from the U.S. FDA, and are approved for use in the EU, Australia, Canada and Japan. CAS No. 50-70-4 is listed on the U.S. TSCA 8(b) inventory. The product is non-hazardous for transport under DOT rules, non-hazardous for air transport under IATA, and not controlled under WHMIS (Canada). Storage and handling. Keep containers sealed and stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from heat, ignition sources and strong oxidizing agents. Per the MSDS: avoid eye contact and wear suitable protective clothing; if eyes are contacted, rinse with running water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention; if ingested, do not induce vomiting and seek immediate medical care. The product is stable, does not polymerize, is non-corrosive, and dissolves readily in cold or hot water.
