Our Sorbitol Powder (D-Glucitol, CAS 50-70-4, INS No. 420(i)) is a cosmetic-grade sugar alcohol produced by catalytic hydrogenation of glucose. It is a white, crystalline powder with a faint sweet taste, approximately 50–60% as sweet as sucrose. This grade is milled to 80–120 mesh and specifically suited for toothpaste and oral care formulations, where it functions as both sweetener and humectant.
Sorbitol is recognized as an ideal base for personal care applications such as toothpaste and mouthwash. It prevents toothpaste from drying out through its humectant function and provides the required viscosity . In oral care, sorbitol provides a soothing mouthfeel, mild sweetness, and a refreshing cool taste, along with resistance to dental caries . The 80–120 mesh particle size ensures smooth integration into paste formulations without grittiness, while the fine powder disperses uniformly during manufacturing. This grade is packed in 25 kg PP bags and available for bulk supply.

Humectant Function in Toothpaste
Sorbitol is a non-volatile polyol that absorbs and retains moisture, preventing toothpaste from drying out and hardening at the tube opening. It keeps the paste viscous but not too dry or moist, maintaining smooth texture throughout shelf life . In Chinese oral care manufacturing, sorbitol is used as a vehicle, humectant, and antifreeze agent at levels of 25–30%, maintaining paste lubricity, color, and mouthfeel .
Sweetener Function
Sorbitol provides a mild, clean sweetness approximately 50–60% that of sucrose. Its negative heat of solution creates a refreshing cooling sensation in the mouth . Unlike sucrose, sorbitol is non-cariogenic—it is not fermented by oral bacteria and does not lower plaque pH, making it suitable for oral care products .
Viscosity and Texture Control
Sorbitol contributes to the rheology of toothpaste formulations. It provides bulk and helps maintain the desired consistency, ensuring the paste extrudes smoothly from the tube and disperses readily during brushing.
80–120 Mesh Particle Size
This mesh range corresponds to fine powder that disperses rapidly and uniformly in paste manufacturing. The particle size is fine enough to avoid grittiness in the final product while remaining free-flowing for handling and dosing. Commercial sorbitol is offered in grades including 80–120 mesh specifically for applications requiring controlled fineness .
Oral Care (Primary)
• Toothpaste: Humectant, sweetener, viscosity control, anti-drying at tube opening—typical use level 25–30%
• Mouthwash: Sweetness, cooling sensation, non-cariogenic
• Dental gels and powders: Moisture retention and palatability
Cosmetics & Personal Care
• Creams and lotions: Humectant and skin conditioning agent, preventing moisture loss
• Hair care: Moisture retention and conditioning
• Other oral care: Chewable dental products and breath fresheners
Used at 15-30% of the paste, calculated as powder against the total batch, sorbitol keeps the water phase from separating and stops the paste hardening in the tube head. The rate is balanced against glycerin and the thickening system so the ribbon still stands on the brush without stringing.
The powder dissolves to a clear, colourless solution, so a gel stays transparent instead of turning hazy. Low reducing sugars also limit the colour drift that shows up in a clear gel far sooner than in an opaque paste.
Sorbitol is non-ionic and does not react with fluoride, triclosan-type actives or the silica abrasive system. It also buffers the water activity of the paste, which reduces the migration of water into the abrasive or out through the tube wall.
Paste that has been through a cold container or a winter warehouse can split when the water phase crystallises. The humectant lowers the free water available, so the paste recovers on warming instead of showing syneresis at the crimp.
In gels applied with a tray or brush, the same grade gives body without an oily after-feel, and it disperses evenly into cellulose thickener without leaving undissolved particles in the mix tank.

Release testing covers assay by HPLC, moisture by Karl Fischer and particle size by sieve analysis, with the residue retained on 120 mesh reported because that fraction is what a consumer would feel as grit. Reducing sugars, chloride and sulfate are checked against the cosmetic specification, and heavy metals are tested to a 5 mg/kg limit. Microbiological counts are run on the finished powder, and the packed material is inspected for visible specks before the bag is closed.
Sampling points are the crystalliser, the mill outlet and the packing head, so a size shift caused by mill wear can be identified before it reaches a customer. Retained samples are held against the lot code for later comparison.
The powder ships in 25kg PP woven bags with an inner PE liner, heat-sealed at the filling head. Palletising and shrink wrapping are available on request, and neutral or buyer-labelled packing can be arranged for bulk orders. Container loading is confirmed per order against the destination port and pallet pattern, and full container, LCL and mixed shipments are handled with the certificate of analysis and booking documents issued before dispatch.

Store in a cool, dry, ventilated warehouse away from direct sunlight and away from strong odours, since the powder picks up smells that would carry into a flavoured paste. Keep bags closed, off the floor and clear of condensing walls, and avoid storage above 40°C. In unopened original packaging the material holds its specification for 24 months; reseal part-used bags and consume them within the current production campaign.
Purpose-Built for Toothpaste
The 80–120 mesh particle size and cosmetic-grade purity are selected for oral care manufacturing. The powder disperses smoothly, delivers dual sweetener-humectant function, and supports the viscosity and texture expectations of toothpaste formulations.
Recognized Oral Care Ingredient
Sorbitol is widely used in toothpaste and mouthwash globally, with documented humectant, sweetener, and non-cariogenic properties . Your formulation benefits from an ingredient with established performance history.
