Our Sorbitol Powder (D-Glucitol, CAS 50-70-4, E420) is a white, crystalline powder with a mild sweet taste, about 60% as sweet as regular sugar. It is a sugar alcohol made from glucose and is widely used in foods, medicines, and personal care products. This grade is supplied in low-moisture form with non-caking properties, packed in 25 kg PP bags, and specifically suited for use as a tobacco humectant.
Sorbitol is best known as a humectant—a substance that holds onto moisture and keeps materials from drying out. In tobacco products, this is exactly what it does: it helps the tobacco stay moist and pliable instead of becoming dry and crumbly. When tobacco dries out too much, it becomes brittle, creates dust during handling, and doesn’t smoke evenly. Sorbitol helps maintain the right moisture balance from manufacturing through storage, so the product reaches the consumer in good condition.
Unlike some other moisture-keeping ingredients, sorbitol is non-volatile, meaning it doesn’t evaporate away over time. It stays in the tobacco and keeps working even after the package has been opened and exposed to different humidity levels. This makes it a reliable choice for maintaining consistent quality.
The non-caking property of this grade means the powder stays loose and free-flowing in storage, rather than forming hard lumps. This makes it easier to handle, weigh, and blend during production. The low-moisture specification ensures that the powder itself does not introduce unwanted water into the tobacco blend, giving manufacturers better control over the final moisture content.

Keeps Tobacco Moist
Sorbitol holds moisture in the tobacco, preventing it from drying out and becoming brittle. This helps reduce dust during handling and keeps the product in good condition for smoking or chewing.
Stays in Place
Sorbitol does not evaporate. Unlike some moisture-keeping ingredients that can disappear over time, sorbitol stays in the tobacco and provides long-lasting protection against drying out.
Handles Humidity Changes

Sorbitol is dissolved with the sugar and flavour portion at 0.5-2.0% on tobacco weight, adjusted against the casing formula and the target moisture of the blend. The powder wets out readily in water at 35-45°C and gives a clear solution that passes the line filter without leaving a residue on the nozzle.
Because the humectant is already distributed through the lamina before the dryer, the shred releases water more evenly and comes out of the cooling section with less case hardening. The surface does not dry to a crust that cracks when the shred is later flexed in the maker.
Pliable shred generates fewer fines through pneumatic transfer, silo discharge and the maker feed. Plants that track dust collection weight and short-fill rates usually see both move in the same direction after the casing solids are lifted into the recommended band.
The water bound by sorbitol is held at a lower vapour pressure than free water, so an opened pack equilibrates with ambient air more slowly and the product does not go brittle in a dry store or in dry cabin air during transport.
Each lot is sampled at the crystalliser, after drying and at the packing head. Assay is run by HPLC, moisture by Karl Fischer, and the 80-120 mesh cut is verified by sieve analysis on a stacked set. Reducing sugars, residue on ignition, heavy metals and arsenic are checked against the release specification before the bag is filled, and microbiological counts are run on the finished powder.
Moisture is the parameter that decides release for this grade, so it is tested twice: once at the dryer outlet and once on the packed material. A lot that picks up water between those two points is held rather than blended off, because the low moisture promise is the reason buyers specify this item.
Standard packing is a 25kg PP woven bag with a PE inner liner, heat-sealed at the filling head to keep the low moisture content intact. Bags are stacked on pallets on request and can be supplied with neutral or buyer-labelled print for bulk orders. Container loading is planned per order against the destination port, the pallet pattern and the total weight, and full container, LCL and mixed shipments are all arranged with the booking documents and the certificate of analysis issued before dispatch.
Keep the bags in a cool, dry, ventilated warehouse, off the floor, away from outer walls that condense and away from strong odours, since the powder takes up foreign smells. Storage above 40°C should be avoided, and opened bags should be resealed and used within a short production window. Under these conditions the powder holds its specified moisture and stays free flowing for 24 months in unopened original packaging.
Moisture held in a narrow band. The low moisture specification is measured at the dryer and again after packing, so the water content you plan your casing solids around is the water content that arrives.
Mesh matched to casing practice. The 80-120 cut dissolves quickly in warm casing water and leaves no grit on the spray nozzle or in the filter, which keeps the casing kitchen running without rework.
