Our Sorbitol Powder (D-Glucitol, CAS 50-70-4, INS No. 420(i)) is a food-grade polyol manufactured by catalytic hydrogenation of glucose. It is a white, hygroscopic, crystalline powder with a faint sweet taste, approximately 50–60% as sweet as sucrose. This grade is positioned as a GRAS food additive for use as both sweetener and humectant across food, pharmaceutical, and personal care applications.
The GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) status of sorbitol is well established in the United States. Under 21 CFR 184.1835, sorbitol is affirmed as GRAS for direct addition to food, with no limitation other than current good manufacturing practice. The FDA’s Substances Added to Food inventory lists its technical effects to include humectant, nutritive sweetener, stabilizer, texturizer, and formulation aid, among others. JECFA has evaluated sorbitol and assigned an ADI “not specified,” the most favorable safety classification for a food additive.

As a Sweetener
Sorbitol provides approximately 50–60% of the sweetness of sucrose, making it suitable for partial or complete sugar replacement in formulations where a mild, clean sweetness is desired. Unlike high-intensity sweeteners, sorbitol also contributes bulk, body, and mouthfeel, eliminating the need for separate bulking agents. It is non-cariogenic and does not raise blood glucose concentrations or require insulin for metabolism, supporting sugar-free and diabetic-friendly product positioning. It also imparts a distinct cooling sensation due to its negative heat of solution, valued in chewing gum, mints, and oral care products.
As a Humectant
Sorbitol is a non-volatile polyol that absorbs and retains moisture, preventing products from drying out, cracking, or losing texture during storage. This function is critical in baked goods, confectionery, toothpaste, and cosmetic creams. In toothpaste, sorbitol is widely used as a humectant and plasticizer, keeping the paste from hardening at the tube opening while contributing a cool, sweet taste. It also inhibits sugar crystallization in syrups and confections, maintaining smooth texture and appearance
Food & Beverage
• Sugar-free confectionery: Chewing gum, candies, mints, cough drops—sweetness, bulk, cooling effect, non-cariogenic
• Bakery & desserts: Sugar-free cakes, fillings, frostings, icings, frozen desserts—humectancy, crystallization inhibition, freezing point depression
• Beverages & spreads: Sugar-free syrups, no-sugar-added jams and jellies—sweetness with reduced color formation
• Dried fruit & granola: Moisture control and sweetness
Pharmaceutical & Oral Care
• Sugar-free syrups and elixirs: palatability, solution stability, crystallization prevention
• Chewable tablets: sweet taste and mouthfeel
• Toothpaste and mouthwash: humectant, plasticizer, cooling sweetness, non-cariogenic
Personal Care
• Cosmetic creams, lotions, and hair care: humectant and skin conditioning agent
Baked goods and baking mixes. Sorbitol holds moisture in the crumb and slows the firming that follows cooling. Used at 2-5% on flour weight, it sits well inside the range of ordinary use for the substance and needs no special justification in a product dossier beyond the technical function.
Frozen dairy desserts and dairy analogues. In ice cream and frozen dessert systems sorbitol controls ice crystal growth and adds body without the sweetness that a sugar solids increase would bring. The GRAS position covers frozen dairy desserts directly, which simplifies the label review for a new SKU.
Confectionery, chewing gum and coatings. Hard candy, gum and panning syrups use sorbitol for glassy texture and resistance to graining. It also carries the sugar-free positioning that the category demands, with the polyol declaration handled at label stage.
Sauces, dressings and condiments. Water activity control in a pourable sauce extends microbial stability without the flavour shift that a salt or acid increase would cause. Sorbitol holds that water at a modest use level and contributes body at the same time.
Beverages and liquid concentrates. Sorbitol masks the mouthfeel gap left when sugar is reduced and carries flavour compounds in a concentrate. Use level stays low, so the carbohydrate contribution on the nutrition panel remains easy to manage.

Release testing follows the monograph parameters: assay by HPLC, moisture by Karl Fischer, reducing sugars by titration, residue on ignition by gravimetry, heavy metals and arsenic against the limits, and microbiological counts on the finished powder. Each result is reported on the certificate against the limit rather than as a pass mark, so a regulatory reviewer can see the margin.
The regulatory pack issued with a shipment contains the statement of GRAS status with its citation, the FCC conformance statement, the specification, the certificate of analysis for the batch and an allergen declaration confirming the material is free of the major declarable allergens and of animal-derived processing aids. These are statements about a substance with a defined identity, issued by the producer, and the certificate of analysis for each shipment remains the governing document on specification.
The powder ships in 25kg PP woven bags with an inner PE liner, heat-sealed against moisture pickup, palletised and stretch-wrapped on request. Neutral bags or buyer-labelled bags are available for bulk orders, with the regulatory statements supplied as a separate document set so that the pack artwork does not have to carry them. Container loading is confirmed per order against the destination port and the palletisation chosen, and LCL and mixed shipments are handled alongside full containers. Documents are issued before dispatch rather than after arrival.
Sorbitol is hygroscopic above roughly 65% relative humidity and picks up odours readily, so the warehouse should be dry, ventilated and free of solvents, spices or other aromatic goods. Keep bags off the floor and away from condensing walls, below 35°C, and close the liner on part-used bags. Stock should move on a first-expiry basis. In original unopened bags, flow and assay hold for 24 months at those conditions.
Dual-Function Simplicity
One ingredient delivers both sweetness and moisture control, simplifying formulation and reducing raw material count. No need to pair a high-intensity sweetener with a separate humectant.
Documented GRAS Status
Full regulatory backing under U.S. 21 CFR 184.1835 and JECFA ADI “not specified” provides confidence for food and beverage product development and labeling. COA and MSDS documentation support your quality and compliance audits.
Consistent Powder Quality
Controlled moisture (≤1.0%) and low reducing sugars (≤0.3%) ensure predictable performance in dry blends, tableting, and moisture-sensitive formulations. The free-flowing crystalline form supports uniform mixing and accurate weighing.
